The route
Climb from the village through the quarry workings to the top of the cliffs, follow the rim, and return past the kiln and the old canal. Steps and rough ground in places.
Worth knowing
- The Hoffmann kiln is one of only a handful left in Britain and is genuinely impressive.
- The border runs through the middle of the village; the pub famously used to have a bar in each country.
- Peregrines and ravens use the quarry faces. Keep back from the edges.

Background
Limestone was quarried here from Roman times and industrially from the eighteenth century, feeding kilns and the canal below. Copper was mined here too, with workings dating back to the Bronze Age.
