Some of the oldest rock in Wales, carrying plants that grow nowhere else in Britain. The reserve itself is closed to the public, so this is a walk to look at it rather than climb it.

The route
Follow the lane and field paths that skirt the base of the crag, keeping to the rights of way. The rock face is best appreciated from below and from the approach, and there is no legitimate access onto the reserve itself.
Worth knowing
- Do not attempt to enter the reserve. It is fenced for good reason and the plants are genuinely irreplaceable.
- The Early Star-of-Bethlehem here flowers in February and grows nowhere else in the country.
- Combine with the Hergest Ridge from Kington if you want to make a day of it.
What you’ll see
Dolerite crags, ancient yews clinging to the rock, and lichen communities of national importance.
Background
The rock is Precambrian, older than almost anything else in Wales. Its dry, warm, south-facing faces have preserved a plant community stranded since the last glaciation.
