The route
A level path runs from the car park to the viewing platforms above the stacks and the arch. Extend east or west along the coast path when the range is open.
Worth knowing
- Castlemartin is an active tank range. The road in closes when firing is on; check the range notice before setting out.
- Guillemots pack the stacks from April to July and the noise carries a long way.
- The clifftop is unfenced beyond the platforms. Keep back from the edge; the limestone is undercut.
What you’ll see
The natural arch, Elegug Stacks with their seabird colonies, and flat limestone cliffs running for miles.
Background
Elegug is the Welsh for guillemot. The range has been in military use since 1939, which has incidentally protected the coastal grassland from farming.
