The route
The Path follows the earthwork north from Montgomery across the Severn plain to Welshpool. Flat by the standards of this trail.
Worth knowing
- The dyke here is the best preserved on the whole trail and genuinely striking.
- The ground is low-lying and can be very wet after rain.
- Montgomery’s castle and Georgian square are both worth the time before you start.
What you’ll see
The dyke as a continuous bank and ditch, the Severn plain, and the hills either side.
Background
Offa built the dyke in the late eighth century, and on this stretch it survives as a bank and ditch up to eight metres from ditch bottom to bank top.
