The route
Follow the Severn Way east from Newtown towards Abermule as far as you fancy, and return. Flat riverside walking.
Worth knowing
- The Severn Way runs 210 miles from the source on Pumlumon to the Bristol Channel.
- The river floods here regularly and the paths can be under water in winter.
- Kingfishers and dippers along the whole stretch.
What you’ll see
The Severn, riverside meadows, and the hills of Montgomeryshire either side.
Background
The Severn was navigable to Welshpool in the eighteenth century, and trows carried goods down to Bristol before the railways.
