The route
Follow the made paths along both banks between the footbridges, crossing wherever suits. Entirely flat and step free.
Worth knowing
- One of the most reliably accessible walks in the county, surfaced throughout.
- Robert Owen, the social reformer, was born here and is buried in the old churchyard nearby.
- The riverside is prone to flooding; the town has large flood defences for good reason.
What you’ll see
The Severn, parkland, and a reasonable chance of a kingfisher.
Background
Newtown was the centre of the Welsh woollen trade, with weavers’ workshops on the top floors of terraced houses. Robert Owen was born here in 1771.
