The route
Surfaced paths and boardwalk loop from the centre to the estuary wall and the lighthouse. Level throughout.
Worth knowing
- Starling murmurations over the reedbeds on winter afternoons draw people from a long way.
- Bearded tits live in the reeds and are most often seen on still mornings.
- The lighthouse on the sea wall is small and easily missed.
What you’ll see
Reedbeds and lagoons, the East Usk lighthouse, waders on the estuary, and starlings in winter.
Background
The reserve was created in 2000 on a power station ash tip, as compensation for habitat lost to the Cardiff Bay barrage.
