The route
Climb from the town onto the common and up to the summit tor, returning by a different line across the common or down to the estuary. Rough underfoot near the top.
Worth knowing
- St Brynach is said to have communed with angels here, which is where the name comes from.
- The summit is a jumble of rock with hut circles and enclosure walls all over it; give yourself time to wander.
- The common is grazed by ponies and the ground is boggy in the hollows.

Background
The fort and settlement on the summit were occupied in the Iron Age. The common below has been grazed under ancient rights ever since.
