The route
Walk through the forest to the beach, then along the sand to Llanddwyn and round the island before returning through the dunes. The island is cut off at high tide.
Worth knowing
- Check the tide. Llanddwyn becomes an island for a few hours either side of high water and people do get caught.
- The view of the whole Snowdon range across the water is the reason this walk is famous.
- Ravens and choughs on the island, and red squirrels in the forest if you are lucky and quiet.

Two lighthouses, the ruins of St Dwynwen’s chapel, pilots’ cottages, and Eryri across the strait.
Background
Dwynwen is the Welsh patron saint of lovers and her feast day, 25 January, is marked across Wales. Her chapel here was a pilgrimage site through the Middle Ages.
