The route
Pick up Glyndŵr’s Way at the eastern end of Maengwyn Street and follow the waymarks up onto the hill, continuing as far as suits before returning. Well signed.
Worth knowing
- Owain Glyndŵr held a parliament here in 1404 and the building on Maengwyn Street still stands.
- Wednesday is market day and the town is at its best.
- Trains from Birmingham and the coast stop here, so a car-free day is easy.

The Dyfi valley, oak woodland, and the hills towards Cadair Idris to the north.
Background
Machynlleth was where Glyndŵr was crowned Prince of Wales and summoned a parliament, which is why the town is often described as the ancient capital.
