The route
The Leete Path follows the line of the old water channel along the valley side, with a return along the river below. Steps and rock in places but well made throughout.
Worth knowing
- The Leete was cut to carry water to the lead mines and follows a contour, so it is level walking with a view down.
- Popular with families and can be busy at weekends; the far end of the valley is quieter.
- Slippery limestone underfoot in the wet.
What you’ll see
Limestone crags, the Alyn river disappearing underground in dry spells, and mature woodland.
Background
The Alyn valley was mined for lead from Roman times to the nineteenth century. The Leete carried water several miles to power the workings.
