The route
The perimeter path runs right round the water, about nine miles, mostly on firm track. Shorter loops are signed from the visitor centre.
Worth knowing
- The archaeological trail on the eastern side takes in several excavated Bronze Age burial mounds.
- Exposed moorland; there is no shelter on the far side of the lake.
- Black grouse are present on the surrounding moor and lek in early spring.

Background
The reservoir was completed in 1976. Excavation before flooding revealed a ritual landscape of Bronze Age barrows now interpreted along the shore.
