The route
Cross the Irfon and take field paths that climb south-west onto the higher ground, then return by lanes and the riverbank. A steady, unremarkable, thoroughly pleasant few hours.
Worth knowing
- The village was once famous for barium chloride water, said to be good for the heart. The spa is long gone.
- Very few walkers come here, so stiles get less maintenance than on busier routes.
- The Heart of Wales line request stop makes this reachable without a car if you plan around the timetable.
What you’ll see
Sheep pasture, the confluence of the Cammarch and Irfon, and buzzards over the hedgerows.
Background
Llangammarch was the third of the Welsh spa towns along this valley, after Llanwrtyd and Builth. The Lake Hotel still trades on the connection.
