The route

Take the field paths up behind the village onto the rocky ground above, follow the top for the views, then descend on the far side and return by the lane. Steep in the first twenty minutes and easy thereafter.

Worth knowing

  • The quarry alongside is active. Stay on the rights of way and pay attention to signage.
  • Best light is in the evening, looking south-west down the valley.
  • Avoid entirely during Royal Welsh Show week unless you enjoy traffic.

Background

Llanelwedd has been quarried for hard stone for well over a century. The Royal Welsh Showground below has hosted the show permanently since 1963, having previously moved around Wales each year.
