A flat surfaced circuit of the boating lake on the southern edge of town. Benches most of the way round, a café halfway, and about as gentle an introduction to walking here as you will find.

The route
Join the path at the water’s edge and keep the lake on one side; it makes no difference which way you go. The café and boathouse sit on the western shore, the reed beds and the dragon sculpture at the southern end. There are no junctions and nothing to work out.
Worth knowing
- The ducks here have no fear whatsoever and will mug you for bread. Bring seed or oats instead, which is better for them.
- Herons fish the shallow southern end first thing. Before nine is your best chance.
- Doable on a winter afternoon in ordinary shoes, which is rare round here.
What you’ll see
Coot, moorhen, swans and a large committee of ducks. Damselflies over the reeds in July.
Background
The lake was dug in the 1870s to give visitors taking the waters something to do between treatments. Llandrindod’s wide streets, pump rooms and hotels all belong to the same burst of Victorian confidence.
