The route
Head up onto the common from the village and follow the crest of the ridge east, then loop back below the rocks on the lower tracks. The going is short grass and outcrop, easy to follow in clear weather.
Worth knowing
- Park considerately in the village. There is very little space and people live there.
- Late afternoon light along the ridge is the best of it, especially in autumn.
- Ravens nest on the outcrops. Give them room in spring.
What you’ll see
Heather, gorse and bare rock, with a long view west towards the Cambrians and the Elan hills.
Background
The outcrops are hard igneous rock left standing as softer material around them eroded away, which is why a modest ridge gives such an outsized view.
