The route
From the church, cross to the field paths on the valley side and follow the Ithon upstream before climbing to a lane and returning. Gentle throughout, with the river never far away.
Worth knowing
- Go into the church. The screen is extraordinary and the building is almost always unlocked.
- The Ithon floods hard in winter and the low fields can be genuinely impassable. Pick a dry spell.
- There is a good chance of otter sign on the muddy banks, even if the animals stay hidden.

The rood screen, the Ithon running through alder and willow, and dippers on the shallows.
Background
The screen dates from around 1500 and survived the Reformation and a Victorian rebuild of the church around it, which is close to a miracle given what happened to most of them.
