The route
A circular boardwalk and path loops round Dinas hill above the confluence. Short but genuinely rough in places, with rock and tree roots.
Worth knowing
- Do not underestimate this one. The boardwalk gives way to slippery rock and it is harder than the distance suggests.
- Twm Sion Cati’s cave is above the path, reached by a scramble. The outlaw is the Welsh Robin Hood.
- Pied flycatchers and redstarts in the oak woods from late April.
What you’ll see
The confluence of the Tywi and Doethie, sessile oak woodland, red kites and dippers.
Background
The Welsh red kite population fell to a handful of pairs in these valleys in the early twentieth century. Every kite in Britain today descends from them.
