The route
The Way leaves the abbey ruins and climbs onto open hill and forest before reaching Bwlch-y-Sarnau. Waymarked throughout.
Worth knowing
- The abbey was intended to be the largest church in Wales and was never finished. Llywelyn’s body was brought here in 1282.
- The forestry sections are being felled in rotation and the views change year to year.
- No shops at either end.

Background
Cwmhir Abbey’s nave would have been the longest in Wales. Llywelyn ap Gruffudd’s headless body was buried here after Cilmeri.
