The route
A pitched path climbs from the layby past the Tommy Jones obelisk to the ridge and up to Corn Du. Pen y Fan is a short walk beyond. back down the same line.
Worth knowing
- The obelisk marks where a five-year-old boy died lost on the mountain in 1900, and is a sobering place to pause.
- Shorter than the Pont ar Daf path but steeper and rougher underfoot.
- Weather on the ridge is a different proposition to the road. Take layers whatever it looks like below.

The Tommy Jones obelisk, Llyn Cwm Llwch below the north face, and the whole central Bannau.
Background
Tommy Jones wandered from his family’s camp at Cwm Llwch in August 1900. His body was found on the ridge a month later and the obelisk was paid for by public subscription.
