The route

Paths loop through the wood from the car park. Short and undulating, muddy after rain.

Worth knowing

  • A Site of Special Scientific Interest, largely for its woodland structure and dead wood species.
  • Genuinely wet ground; boots even in summer.
  • Bluebells and wild garlic in spring.

What you’ll see

Veteran oaks, wet woodland, fungi in autumn and woodland birds.

Background

The wood has been continuously wooded for centuries and holds species that only occur where cover has never been cleared.
