The route
Climb from the town over Table Mountain and Pen Cerrig-calch onto the high ridges, returning by a different line or continuing north.
Worth knowing
- The Cambrian Way runs 288 miles from Cardiff to Conwy and deliberately takes the mountain line throughout.
- This stage is properly exposed with no shelter above the town.
- Pen Cerrig-calch has limestone on top of sandstone, which is geologically odd.

Table Mountain’s fort, the limestone cap, and the Black Mountains ridges running north.
Background
The Cambrian Way was championed by Tony Drake for decades against official resistance and was finally recognised in 2019.
