The route

From the car park, drop to the stream and follow the path up past the falls, climbing on steps and boardwalk, then loop back through the forestry above. Short but steep in sections.

Worth knowing

• Best in the day or two after heavy rain. In summer drought it is much reduced.
• The steps and boardwalks get slippery under wet leaves in autumn.
• Combine with a climb onto the ridge above if you want a full day out.

What you’ll see

Several falls in quick succession, mossy gorge woodland, and dippers on the stream.

Background

The valley was planted with conifers in the twentieth century, but the gorge itself kept its native oak and rowan because it was too steep to plant.
