The route
Field paths climb out of the valley on either side of the river; take one up, follow the ridge track, and drop back by another. The Teme itself marks the England-Wales border along much of this stretch.
Worth knowing
- This is working farmland with a lot of stiles, several of them past their best. Reasonable boots and a bit of patience.
- The border runs down the middle of the river here, so you will change country several times without noticing.
- Report broken stiles to Powys County Council. On paths this quiet, nobody else will.
What you’ll see
Hay meadows, curlew in spring on the wetter ground, and a landscape of small fields that has barely changed shape in centuries.
Background
Beguildy is Bugeildy, the shepherd’s house. The upper Teme was drovers’ country, and the lanes running east over the hills were the roads that took Welsh cattle to English markets.
